Urban League of Greater Hartford
Organized in 1911 by the Chicago based African American physician, Dr. George Haynes, the National Urban League will soon commemorate its 100th year anniversary. The Urban League of Greater Hartford is one of over 100 affiliates around the country. With a racially diverse membership, the organization has been on the frontline assisting families with housing emergencies, job training, education, and counseling. The Urban League provides meeting space for community outreach activities such as the Weed and Seed Program and the Greater Hartford Male Leadership Program. For years the Urban League of Greater Hartford operated its offices in the Collin Bennett Building. The structure was named after the Jamaican born entrepreneur and civic and religious leader, who owned the modern geometrical multilevel brick building on Albany Avenue adjacent to the Artists Collective. However, in the mid-1990s, the Urban League of Greater Hartford constructed its own building. Headquartered in a 20th century modern style facility, the building is an imposing geometrical building on Woodland Avenue near the complex of St. Francis Hospital. In the vicinity are the Classical Magnet School and the Connecticut Historical Society.
